Music Therapy services are provided to clients at locations throughout Northeast Ohio. In addition to the University Circle location, clients are seen through contracts with various social service, medical and educational agencies.
Individuals who benefit from music therapy have needs encompassing a wide range of lifes challenges. Among them are children, adolescents and adults with:
- Physical and developmental disabilities
- Behavioral and social disorders
- Learning disabilities
- Language delays
- Autism spectrum disorders
- Asperger Syndrome
Music therapy is also used effectively to address issues relating to:
- Serious illness
- Cognitive and psychosocial dysfunctions.
Music can elicit interaction from individuals with Alzheimers
Disease. Music assisted relaxation, song writing and improvisation are used to provide comfort and distraction from pain for patients who are terminally ill. Adapted music instruction is tailored by the music therapist to give
support and success for individuals diagnosed with with mental illness.
Young children
Music
therapy provides a vehicle for self-expression, improved social, speech and language
skills and enhanced motor, play and cognitive development for children
with special needs. Music experiences build on the strengths and interests of each child and may include singing, movement, song-writing,
dramatization, improvisation, listening and instrument playing. Parents participate as active partners and may receive
coaching in activities for home use.
Elementary age children
Music therapy is a creative approach used to elicit
and reinforce the learning process. Task-orientation, auditory and visual
sequencing and symbol recognition are addressed in age-appropriate
music experiences. Instruction is tailored to individual needs to increase
the opportunity for success at each stage of development. Adapted instruction
is offered on piano, guitar, drums and other instruments.
Adolescents and adults
Music is a powerful motivational tool that complements
other forms of therapy. It can be the means to encourage responses from
individuals who have difficulty verbalizing and the starting point for fulfilling
relationships. Because music plays a significant role in adolescent culture, it may
become the tool to open more effective and valuable communication. Music, combined
with structured interventions, can increase response level and foster control, independence
and recall.
Partner and group sessions
Geared to participants' individual needs, partner and group sessions are structured to provide opportunities to learn and practice social skills. For younger children or individuals with limited language, objectives may include remaining with the group, increasing attention to peers, sharing and turn-taking. Partner and group sessions for older clients may address skills such as group decision-making, problem solving, negotiation and on-topic conversation.
Motivating musical experiences are designed to encourage group cohesiveness. Young children enjoy songs that teach and reinforce new or developing skills. Engaging movement and instrument play facilitate peer interaction. Ensembles, designed for older children, teens and adults, provide the exciting experience of playing in a band
