Music Therapy

Individuals who benefit from music therapy have needs encompassing a wide range of life’s challenges. Among these people are children and adults with physical, developmental or learning disabilities; behavioral and social problems; language delays; and autism spectrum disorders. Music therapy is also used effectively to address issues relating to serious illness and cognitive and psychosocial dysfunctions. In
addition, music can elicit interaction from individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease. Music-assisted relaxation, song-writing and improvisation may provide comfort and distraction from pain for patients with terminal illnesses. Adapted music instruction offers opportunities for support and success for individuals diagnosed with mental illness. Individual, partner and small group sessions are available Monday through
Saturday. An assessment is required prior to registration.

GraphicEstablished in 1966, The Cleveland Music School Settlement's Music Therapy program has been a pioneer in helping people with special needs. It was the first community-based program of its kind and the first to provide services on a contractual basis. One of the largest programs in the country and the most comprehensive in the state, it has received support from the Ohio Department of Mental Health and is approved by The American Music Therapy Association as a training site for interns. Music Therapy services at the Settlement are data-based and therapists are actively involved in research related to the effects of music therapy interventions on individuals.
