Who is Almeda Adams? Founder of The Music Settlement, Almeda Adams will always be remembered for her interest in assisting the needy and a desire to bring culture to the lives of Clevelanders in 1912. Ms. Adams, who lost her sight at six months old, became a competent instructor of voice and piano. She was first attracted to the idea of founding a Music Settlement in Cleveland after being read an article that her father read to her reagarding the New York City settlement house. After hearing of the New York City settlement house, Ms. Adams scheduled a trip to New York City to visit the house for herself - it was after this visit that she dreamt of the possibility of such an establishment in Cleveland.
She shared her interest with members of The Fortnightly Music Club which included many prominent Clevelanders. The idea of a Music Settlement in Cleveland sparked intense interest by the members of The Fortnightly Music Club and a committee was formed and worked expeditiously and on April 25, 1912, The Cleveland Music School Settlement was legally incorporated.
What is The Music School Settlement? The purpose of the organization, as stated in the articles of incorporation, were to make musical instruction possible for all by offering to both children and wage earners - unable to pay studio fees - the best instruction, at a modest price; to provide scholarships for talented pupils who were not able to pay for lessons; to stimulate a love for music, and to become a factor in the musical life of the city.
