Lullaby 101

Lullabies are a universal and ancient song form that plays an important role in comforting infants and providing a critical bonding experience. New and prospective parents will learn a repertoire of lullabies to help calm and settle their newborns. In addition, the use of music for parents' own self-expression, stress reduction/relaxation and coping skills will be demonstrated.

Music & Movement

Parent and child participate in movement activities, singing and chanting. This informal, yet musically rich environment exposes children to tonality and meter. Classes meet Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Morning, afternoon and evening classes are available. Call for class times.
Rhythm, Reading & Rhyme

Using music, participants explore a new theme each week (ie. body parts, animals, letters, numbers). Books and story-telling, finger plays, musical instruments and movement activities capture children's imaginations while aiding in the development of important pre-reading skills.

This new class is designed for parent/caregiver and child to experience the joy of music together. Participants learn songs, create music, explore a variety of instruments and much more! Space is limited to 8 pairs.

Basic dance terminology will be used to teach the fundamentals of classical and modern dance. The focus of the 40 minute class is to learn to use the body as an expressive instrument.

Students are encouraged to explore music by associating familiar motions such as walking and running with the rhythm of music. Activities involving singing and playing develop listening, creative improvisation and coordination skills.

Keyboard Explorers

Children experiment with improvisation and musical expression through keyboard, listening, singing and movement activities. Students begin to read music and learn basic music theory.

Pre-Ballet

Boys and girls will be introduced to the vocabulary and technique of ballet. During the 40 minute class, students will warm up at the barre and move to the center of the room, learning about the body and experiencing the discipline of classical ballet.

Attire for boys: black tights, white t-shirt, ballet shoes.

Creative Drama

Children will have a unique opportunity to discover their creative potential using elements of theater, voice, puppets and movement. The young actors will perform in a showcase for family and friends on the last day of class. The showcase will be a culmination of all the elements learned in class, drawing on the students' personal experiences, as they write and design an original play for the final production.

The Young Percussionist

Students will learn elementary percussion techniques and musical concepts while being introduced to the vast array of percussion instruments. Students will be required to purchase materials for the class, available from the instructor.

Preschool and Day School
The Settlement's Early Childhood Education Department offers preschool and day school programs for children ages 3 and 4 years of age. The Preschool is a half-day program beginning in September and ending the first Tuesday in June. Children attend either a 2, 3, 4 or 5-day program (depending on the age of the child), with Extended Day, Lunch Bunch and Enrichment Monday options available. The Day School program provides working parents childcare in a learning environment enriched by the arts and science. The Day School is in session throughout the year, 5 days a week, 7:00 a.m. until 5:45 p.m.
An open house is scheduled November 11, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. for parents interested in enrolling their child for the 2008-2009 school year. Call the Early Childhood Education registrar at (216) 421-5806 ext. 306 for registration information.
